Chapter Eleven

Hugh’s arms felt strong and safe as he lowered Meg to the bed. She longed to be a part of him, to join with him as she had with Joe.

She didn’t want to wait for them to undress. Just the sight of him shrugging out of his jacket set off a hunger so powerful that she caught Hugh by his silken tie and pulled him down.

Grinning, he braced his hands on either side of her. “I wouldn’t want to ruin your dress.”

“My dress will be fine.”

“Can I take my shoes off?”

“If you insist.” Without waiting, Meg unbuckled his belt, remembering instinctively how to unwork it by touch. She knew so much about him, including how quickly he could elevate her past herself into a glorious world of sensation. She could hardly wait.

Laughing, Hugh kicked off his shoes. “You’re some woman!”

“It’s been two years. That’s long enough.” After fiddling with the buttons on his shirt, Meg gave up. “Oh, keep the darn thing on.”

“Not so fast. I’ve never done this with you before, or at least I don’t remember it clearly,” Hugh said. “I want to enjoy every minute.”

She stared up at him in the faint moonlight streaming through the window. She yearned for the nip of his teeth against her breasts, for the hardness of him between her thighs, yet something held her back.

He didn’t remember being her husband. Didn’t remember the first time they’d made love, when she gave him the special gift she’d saved all her life.

And she was about to throw away their reunion as if it meant nothing more than momentary lust.

Although the heat refused to die, something inside Meg shrank back. “Hugh…”

He rolled down beside her on the bed as his hands feathered her dress up her legs. “If you insist, however…”

“Hugh!”

He stopped. “Did I miss something?”

“It’s not your fault.”

“What’s not my fault?” He propped himself on one elbow. In the semidarkness, he formed a watchful silhouette.

“I just realized—I mean, making love means more to me than this,” Meg said.

“More than being with a man who loves you?”

His words should have reassured her. They didn’t. “You can’t love me. You don’t know me well enough.”

“We were married!”

“Joe and I were married,” Meg said. “You’re only partly him.”

A warning note crept into his voice. “I’ll never be him completely, Meg.”

“I didn’t mean that,” she said. “I mean, to you I’m still a strange woman. Maybe you find me attractive…”

“That’s an understatement!”

“…but you don’t remember the stages of falling in love. We haven’t had a chance to go through them again. At least, you haven’t.”

Meg stopped, feeling miserable. Hugh had every right to be angry at her for leading him on and then stopping him cold.

“I’m not as concerned about the past as you are,” Hugh admitted. “Maybe I’ve become used to living with a blank space in my brain, although it’s shrinking. I do remember quite a few things about us, more than you suspect. I don’t think my amnesia is the real problem, though.”

“It isn’t?” Meg asked.
